Why do gay men often seem to speak with a lisp?

this is not just some stereotype. i have met alot of gay men and it seems as though a higher proportion of gay men speak with a lisp . do they affect a lisp because they are gay or does being gay correlate with having a lisp like with red heads ussually having freckles
