How do I fix the rear shock squeak on a Mongoose xr-75?

Bought it about a month ago, and the creak/squeak noise is getting on my nerves. I know a lot about bikes, but this is my first mountain bike and I have no experience with rear shocks. It's not the actual spring and as far as I can tell, the noise is coming from inside the metal tube the spring is wrapped around. Is it safe to take it apart and educate myself on the inner workings? I would really like to not have to buy another shock. Thanks
